All products available in the UK are either Low maintenance, Medium maintenance, or High maintenance. There is no product available in the UK where companies boast, NO MORE PAINTING or MAINTENANCE FREE
The so called self cleaning paints and textured coatings products only clean themselves on south facing walls. So they come under the heading, Low to Medium maintenance products.
There are some new coloured renders available that are spray applied that do not require painting.
We do not install these products.
The reason is because I have watched some of these renders over the past three years and find they are not staying clean very long and if you put a ladder on them they mark very easily. The new Derby Royal Hospital on the west facing wall has gone dirty already and that’s not been finished long. In other areas I have seen it falling off.
In December 2010 I was asked for some impartial advice regarding a Monchouche one coat coloured render on a ground floor of a three-story building. The building had been built nine years ago and the render had a crack from the top of the patio window up to a balcony. It is not uncommon for cracks to appear near lintals above windows and doors. If the correct recommended meshing had been installed this should not have happened. What was more disturbing was that the owner had a problem with dirt and algae on the surface of the render. The owner had power washed the render three times in nine years and each time he was left with large quaintly of sand from the render on the floor. The render was breaking down in less than ten years.
If I were to pay for a new render I would want a minimum life of fifty years not ten.
